Mo Farah is not English.

But if there's an award for Somalis who spent a few years in England before setting up home permanently in the US then he'd be at the top of the list.

Depends what you mean by great. If it's an exceptional personal achievement, there are any number to choose from. If it's for what he's done to uplift others, there are also many to choose from - writers, musicians, heart surgeons, etc. My vote would go for Jack Preger.

Always thought Stephen Hawking was over rated.

Just was in that one movie and then was never heard of again.

And while he may be technically still alive, I would argue he's not really alive enough to count.

As for David Attenborough, if it was the most boring English man he would win, and that is no mean feat, given that's where English men excell

Wasn't there a heart surgeon that was poking Princess Diana?

There might have been more than one I don't think she was particularly fussy.

No, it's not.

If I was willing to do the research, I could come up with someone (and break this alleged circuit).

I'm not willing to do the research.

True, but rather circuitous.

Re: Who is the greatest living Englishman?
Precisely.

It's why I haven't made a nomination of my own - people working in the background don't have high visibility, but they shouldn't be ignored.

Not ignoring them requires research.

How many heart surgeons do you know?

Re: Who is the greatest living Englishman?
People tend to concentrate on celebrities, which is understandable, but really - is anyone in show business "greater" than a decent heart surgeon, say?
